Talkingminds have a long history of providing therapy and support to members of the LGBTIQ+ community. We acknowledge the disproportionate prevalence of mental illness, addiction, homelessness and suicide rates within the LGBTIQ+ community and the resulting marginalisation.
We understand that some clients may have had negative experiences with mental health service providers and are seeking a LGBTIQ+ ‘friendly’ approach. These experiences may have ranged from misunderstanding and misplacement of the importance of sexuality and gender with the context of mental health; they may have also included judgement or discrimination; they may have included avoidance on the therapist’s part in terms of important conversations and they may have included a perceived lack of warmth or unconditional positive regard. These experiences may have also included invalidation of the lived experiences of LGBTIQ+ people within the wider socio-political landscape. These experiences may have eroded trust and left a person unwilling to reach out for further support.
We welcome enquiries from clients of all genders, sexualities and relationship types.
We provide services to members of the LGBTIQ+ community that include:
- Individual counselling, psychotherapy and clinical psychological services including telehealth pscychology
- Couple counselling
- Family counselling
We offer counselling, psychotherapy and psychological support for LGBTIQ+ clients who may be experiencing the following:
- ‘coming out’ and the associated issues to do with family, friends and supports
- relationship problems
- navigating the psychological impacts of discrimination, exclusion and isolation
- navigating work related issues within cultures of bias
- gender questioning
- support to live a rich, full and meaningful life
In some instances, you may qualify for a Medicare rebate with a GP referral. Alternatively, our private therapists provide therapy at very affordable individual and couple rates and in most cases nearly matching the gap payment of some Medicare therapists.
